BiographyHistory

Billy Hughes was a journalist and politician. During World War I, as Australian Prime Minister, he enthusiastically promoted Australian involvement in the war and was one of the leading pro-conscription advocates. He was expelled from the Australian Labor Party in 1916, following the first unsuccessful conscription referendum. He then formed a coalition Nationalist/Liberal unity government, with Liberal leader Joseph Cook serving as his deputy.
