BiographyHistory

Dowie was a Congregational pastor, faith healer and mystic. He spent a lengthy period in Australia during the 1870s and 1880s, and in this time became a controversial and divisive figure within church circles. He was frequently lampooned in the press, and was one of a number of sectarian anti-Catholic preachers satirised in Henry Kendall's poem 'A Psalm for the Conventicle'. In 1888 he left Australia for the United States, where he subsequently established Zion City, in the state of Illinois.
