BiographyHistory

Jessie Waterhouse was the eldest of eight children of Buxton Forbes Laurie, pilot and harbourmaster at Port Adelaide, and his wife Mary (Small). She married Irishman William Frederick Fortescue Smythe in February 1878, and they had a son and a daughter. She was widowed in 1882. In 1891 she married the widower John Immyns (Jack) Waterhouse. There is no record of children. She died in England.

Paul Depasquale, A Critical History of South Australian Literature 1836-1930 (1978), describes Waterhouse as 'Well-known in Adelaide as a writer of serials' (p. 155). However, these serials have not been traced.
