The bookselling business F. F. Bailliere was established in Melbourne in 1860, soon after the arrival from England of the owner, Ferdinand Francois Bailliere. Bailliere was a member of a London bookselling and publishing family, who also had publishing connections in Paris and New York. When he began publishing in 1862, his works included Paris, London, New York and Madrid as places of publication, and some works were issued as joint imprints with his father's London firm, Hippolyte Bailliere. Bailliere claimed in the mid-1860s to be a publisher for the Victorian government. His bookshop, which was at first at Temple Court, and later in Collins Street, was described by the Bulletin as a 'constant resort of ... literary and medical celebrities'.

The 55 or so works published by Bailliere included a number of narratives of Australian exploration, and some fiction and verse by notable members of Melbourne society, but Bailliere was best known as the publisher of gazetteers and other directories of the Australian colonies.

The business ceased when it became insolvent in 1880.
