'In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the Australian government was striving to enhance its international standing in the arts, it chose to focus on film. Many films were produced to global acclaim. After watching Bruce Beresford's "Breaker" Morant (1980), Gillian Armstrong's My Brilliant Career (1979), or Peter Weir's Gallipoli (1981), many in academic contexts outside Australia were drawn to examine Australian writing. Since then, film has not lost its prominence among those who study Australian literature. Here, Sheckels discusses the use of Australian film in teaching Australian literature and the ways that enhance that undertaking. He explores three directions that teachers might pursue in integrating film into Australian literature courses.' (Publication abstract)

'Sheckels suggests that John Marsden's popular, multiple award-winning "Tomorrow" series of seven books–primarily but certainly not exclusively for young readers–has this very Escher-like quality. They possess a double-voicedness much in the spirit of what Bakhtin suggests in his study of Dostoevsky, offering a–much in John Schilb's or Stanley Fish's terms–resisting reading and then, perhaps, a disconcerting rhetorical flip back upon itself. The texts then are rhetorically interesting, but so is the way in which the texts serve as an example of what Bakhtin implies about double-voicing but perhaps fails to make sufficiently clear because of his tendency to list and offer misleading generalizations.' Many have noted the prevalence of the emotion of fear in Peter Weir's Australian films. In dealing with this fear, commentators have directed their focus at the world external to that which Weir's characters inhabit. The commentators have asked what is it 'out there' that these characters are so afraid of. As is wont of all good scholars they have attempted to discern an answer that unites Weir's oeuvre.

Argues that 'the film adaptations of Carey's fiction seem to pull the work away from the postmodern aesthetic and, as a consequence, away from what Carey was positing through its use. The films offer something more modern or realistic, thereby confusing or altering Carey's themes' (81).
