Based in Adelaide (South Australia), the Southern Cross Feature Film Company was co-founded by Sir David Gordon and largely associated with director Raymond Longford. Its first production was Longford's The Woman Suffers (1918). Shortly afterwards Longford convinced Gordon and his directors to provide financial backing for what was to become his and the company's greatest success, the classic film adaptation of C. J. Dennis' The Sentimental Bloke, starring Arthur Tauchert and Lottie Lyell. A sequel, Ginger Mick, was released in 1920 with the same production team and principal cast members. The company's last known film, The Blue Mountains Mystery (1921), also directed by Longford was produced by E. J. Carroll and Dan Carroll.
