BiographyHistory

An all-male literary society, the Bread and Cheese Club was formed in Melbourne in 1938, with J. K. Moir as its first president. Its twelve original members, including Edward Harrington, sought to encourage a love for, knowledge of and pride in Australian literature, art and music. The society published the journal Bohemia, as well as anthologies and selected works by many well-known writers (Oxford Companion to Australian Literature).

Affiliated with the club was the Bread and Cheese Songwriters and Composers group which was active during the 1940s and 1950s.
