BiographyHistory

Born in Delianuova, Reggio Calabria, Italy, in 1924, Alfredo was called for military service in 1943 and, on the announcement of the armistice between Italy and the Allies later that year, was taken prisoner by the Germans.

Returning after the war, he continued his studies, gained a teaching diploma and enrolled at the University of Naples. Alfredo interrupted his studies to join his father, who had emigrated to Australia more than 20 years earlier. After working as a cabinetmaker, he became a part-time student at the University of Western Australia and from 1951 to 1970, Alfredo taught English to Italian migrants as well as teaching Italian for the Adult Education Board.

Alfredo's articles have appeared in newspapers in Italy and Australia. In 1970 he founded the Italian language newspaper La Rondine in Perth, but it closed in 1973. He has been a member of the Accademia Internazionale Artistica Letteraria di Cita` di Boretto and, in 1987, was the recipient of the Australian Italian Friendship award, Western Australia. For over twenty years he has served as the president of ANFE, an association for the welfare of Italian migrant families. In 1990, Alfredo was awarded first prize for a short story in the Unione Italiani Estero International Competition. He has published in Italian and English. His cousin and compatriot is poet Luigi Strano (q. v.).
