Salvatore Chirico emigrated to Australia from the agricultural district of Ramacca in the Sicilian province of Catania. He has worked as a labourer in Victoria and published in the Sicilian dialect in Sicily as well as in Australia. His poetry has been read on the Italian program of Radio 3EA and his poem Currispunnenza [Correspondence] won the first prize for foreign poets from ASLA in Palermo, 1984. Chirico has also served as correspondent for a poetry magazine published in Palermo. He has published in Antologia dialettale dei poeti d'oggi [Dialect Anthology of Contemporary Poets] (1963), Almannaco Siciliano (1969), Australia's Italian Poets (1976) and Voci Nostre (1979). He has also published individual poems in Sicilian newspapers and journals and in La Fiamma.
