BiographyHistory

Enoe Di Stefano trained as a primary school teacher in Italy before emigrating. In Australia she has worked as a teacher of Italian and organiser of Italian language classes. Her poem Ombre [Shadows] won second prize in a national literary contest in Milan in 1972 and she has won a number of prizes in Italy for her short stories. The story, L'Ultima Nave [The Last Ship], was awarded second prize for narrative by the Dante Alighieri Society of Bari in December 1985 as the result of the world-wide competition La Dante Alighieri e L'Emigrazione Italiana nel Mondo. Another short story, Il Debito [The Duty], was awarded third prize at the 1987 Campania Felix competition held by the Accademia Internazionale di San Marco di Belle Arti Lettere e Scienze. She also has several completed paintings to her credit. She has been active in various community organisations, having been responsible for the direction of the CO AS IT schools between 1968 and 1982. For the three years from 1976 to 1978, she was a member of the Multicultural Education sub-committee of the Australian Council for Ethnic Affairs. In 1979 she was awarded an MBE.

In 1996, Enoe and Alfie Di Stefano took part in a series of interviews about migrant experiences titled Tales from a Suitcase, which was produced as a video cassette by SBS Independent productions .
