Barnes is also an author of textbooks. He has edited/adapted for children, works by a number of authors (including Shakespeare). He was editor of the Modern Encyclopaedia of Australia, and New Zealand (1964) and the Encyclopaedia of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea (1965).
