Dmytro Nytczenko was born in the Poltava region of the Ukraine. He graduated from the Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute, becoming a teacher of Ukrainian and Russian. He was sent to the front at the beginning of World War II but was captured by the Germans and spent some time in a prisoner-of-war camp. He and his family emigrated to Australia after the war. In Australia he worked with the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and in his spare time taught at Ukrainian Saturday Schools. He was head of the Ukrainian Schools Council in Australia between 1954 and 1962.
His first poem was published in 1925 and he subsequently contributed regularly to various publications, first in the Ukraine and, after his emigration, to the Ukrainian language press in exile. While still in the Ukraine he published two collections of poetry and one of short stories. He has edited a five yearly almanac and has written a Ukrainian orthographical dictionary. He has been a member of the Organisation of Ukrainian Writers in Exile and President of the Vasyl Symonenko Literary and Arts Club in Melbourne. His work has been read on Radio 3EA and he has read at many public forums including in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide and in Canada and the United States.
