Pulgis Andriusis was born in Gaidziai in the Utena region in Lithuania and began studying fine arts, then transferred to humanities. After completing his studies he worked for various newspapers, becoming a prominent journalist and theatre critic. A skilled linguist, he was active in the Esperanto movement and worked as a translator in several languages. During the war, he fled to Germany where he resumed his journalistic activities and started writing his first book. Before his departure for Australia, he was asked to write a series of articles on his new country to be published in Frankfurter Illustrierte. The caustic tone of these articles created a stir, and the Australian Government officially asked for the publication to be terminated. In Australia, he worked as a railway carriage cleaner in Chullora, then moved to Sydney, and finally settled in Adelaide where he became a mail sorter with the PMG.
Andriusis' novel Sudiev, Kvietkeli! [Goodbye, My Little Flower!] was the first book published in the Lithuanian language in Australia. He also co-wrote an historical account of Lithuanian settlement in Australia titled Blezdingeles Prie Torrenso [Swallows by the Torrens] 1947-1962.
