BiographyHistory

Rowland Skemp was the youngest son of a Baptist minister. He went to school at Cheltenham, England, and then studied drawing and music. After school he became an apprentice calico designer in Manchester. When he became ill he joined his brother Samuel in Tasmania. The two brothers took up a selection at Myrtle Bank, north Eastern Tasmania, where they established a farm. They remained there for the rest of their lives. In 1894, Skemp married F. S. Kearney (q.v.).

In 1919 Skemp printed a book of verse, Musings by the Wayside by a Tiller of the Soil, which he distributed privately; listed in the Foreword of the posthumously published Poems by a Pioneer [1954], copies of the earlier work have not been traced.
