BiographyHistory

During his time in Australia, William Senior worked as the parliamentary reporter (his official title being Principal Shorthand Writer) and editor of Hansard in Brisbane. He established and trained a Parliamentary Shorthand Cadet Corps. A keen fisherman, his books on the subject include Waterside Sketches : A Book for Wanderers and Anglers (1875), Anderton's Angling (1878), By Stream and Sea for Wanderers and Anglers (1877), Travel and Trout in the Antipodes: An Angler's Sketches in Tasmania and New Zealand (1879), Angling in Great Britain (1883), Near and Far: An Angler's Sketches of Home and Colonial Life (1888) and Pike and Perch (1900). He also wrote numerous travel documentaries, including Notable Shipwrecks (1873), The Royal River: The Thames from Source to Sea (1885) and The Thames from Oxford to the Tower (1890). Senior's works appeared regularly in the Queenslander (he wrote a series of articles on his travels and fishing exploits in New Zealand for this journal) as well as in English magazines such as the Gentleman's Magazine.
