Born in London, Ruth Williams was an artist who wrote a number of children's books in the 1940s and 1950s. She is most admired for Verity of Sydney Town (1950) which won the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award in 1951. Verity, sent to a farm during her father's absence during Macquarie's governship of New South Wales, has a number of pioneering adventures, including fighting fires and bushrangers. Williams also wrote The Aboriginal Story (1955). Williams' books were all illustrated by her husband, Rhys Williams (1894-1976).
