BiographyHistory

Robert Lathrop Murray was educated in England at Cambridge University and served in the Peninsular War. In 1815 he was transported for bigamy, but was pardoned soon after his arrival in Sydney, New South Wales, and had moved to Hobart Town in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) by 1821. As 'A Colonist' he wrote letters to the Hobart Town press attacking the administration of Governor Arthur. He continued his attack when he became the founding editor of the Hobart Town Gazette. Murray was involved with other newspapers and magazines including Murray's Austral-Asiatic Review which he founded in 1828.

Murray returned to England in 1847 and died on his family estate in Shropshire.
