Anamaria Beligan was born and grew up in Romania, where she completed her undergraduate studies at the Film Academy in Bucharest. In an interview with the Epoch Times, she described herself as refugee from communist Romania. She continues to write in both Romanian and English since she moved to Melbourne, where she also pursues her interest in producing and directing films. Beligan is co-proprietor of The Athanor, an independent film/video and multimedia production company, and a graduate of Monash University's Masters in Applied Linguistics.

To 2011, Beligan has authored three novels and three short story collections, defined by literary and formal experimentation. Her first novel is written as a series of letters to the Mona Lisa; her second full-length work is set in a dilapidated movie theatre where Romanian immigrants live and work. Her most recent novel has been described as a contemporary version of the Arabian nights.

Beligan's fiction and reviews have appeared in numerous Romanian and Australian literary journals. Her interviews with Australian authors Carmel Bird, Les Murray, Robert Dessaix, and Gail Jones have appeared in the Romanian publication ORIZONT.
