BiographyHistory

Fitchett was active in the Methodist church as a preacher and educator. In 1882 he became the first president of the Methodist Ladies' College, Kew and in 1904 he was elected first president of the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Australasia.

Fitchett also worked as a journalist and writer. He contributed weekly columns to the Methodist Spectator and Chronicle (under the pen name 'XYZ') and to The Argus (under the pen name 'Vedette'). He also served as an editor of the Southern Cross, the Daily Telegraph and Review of Reviews. In addition to his novels, Fitchett wrote several books extolling the British Empire and its citizens and also wrote Australian-themed books such as From Convict to Bushranger (1938).
