Norman Robert McKeown was educated at the Sydney Grammar School, and served in the Boer War. He spent ten years as an actor in Australia, then a similar period as a farmer in South Africa, where he lived for a total of twenty years before moving to England. His first two novels, which appeared under his own name, have Australian themes. The twelve that followed were published under his pseudonym Norman Giles, and are connected with Africa and England. His play, 'Travellers', was produced on the Australian stage, but not published. His final publication, a poem published posthumously in the Sydney Bulletin in 1954, also appeared under his pseudonym.
