Alan Reid was educated in Sydney, and worked in political journalism for over 50 years in the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery, during which time he witnessed thirteen prime ministerships and became Dean of the Corps of National Political Reporters. He also wrote several books of political analysis including The Gorton Experiment (1971), The Whitlam Venture (1976) and The Power Struggle (1969), amongst others.

During his time as correspondent in Canberra for the Daily Telegraph he wrote a novel, 'The Bandar-Log', which was never published due to its perceived libellous content. He also wrote controversial plays which were performed, but not published.
