BiographyHistory

Agnes G. Murphy was a journalist and one of the founders of the Austral Salon of Music, Literature and the Arts in Melbourne, founded in 1890 by a small group of women journalists as a club for women writers. It developed into a club for artistic and intellectual women interested in any of the fine arts and provided an important entrée for many aspiring women musicians. Murphy was also social editor of Melbourne Punch for some time during the 1890s, and continued to write the 'Ladies Letter' as Rhoda after moving to London ca. 1895.

  • The Austral Salon, of which Agnes Murphy was a founding member, was one of the first four groups to affiliate with the National Council of Women of Victoria in 1902. Such artists as Ada Crossley, Amy Castles, Nellie Melba, Florence Autral, Marjorie Lawrence, Denise Dowling and Tilly Ashton were first heard at the Salon, which continues its main aim of encouraging young artists by awarding scholarships and hosting student performances.
  • The date given for Murphy's arrival in Australia is 1858, in Margaret C. Murphy Women Writers and Australia (1988). This must be an error, as birth date is given as 1865. '1858' is possibly a typo for '1885'.
  • Murphy was later involved in the establishment of an Austral Salon in London ca. 1895
  • Agnes Murphy wrote as Rhoda for Melbourne Punch.
