A Yorkshireman educated at Manchester Grammar School, Hebblewhite first came to Sydney late 1879, returning to England to fetch his family in 1880, and was back again in 1884. He was briefly editor of an Anglican journal before joining the Goulburn Penny Post, which he edited from May 1885 until 1900. He was once called 'the best leader writer in New South Wales', and it is said he was invited to join Archibald's Bulletin. He was a supporter of American single or land tax campaigner Henry George and an early Labor Party supporter. In 1921 Hebblewhite put together a substantial series for the Penny Post entitled 'Recollections of a Journalist'.
