Jack Lusby's father was a school teacher who worked in various parts of New South Wales. Lusby completed his education at Sydney High School and then studied at the Julian Aston Art School under Henry Gibbons. During the late 1930s Lusby took flying lessons. He served in the RAAF during World War II flying fighers and bombers in the Middle East, and testing planes at Bankstown and Richmond, New South Wales and Amberley, Queensland.

Lusby's cartoons were published in the Courier-Mail and the Bulletin and many of his stories appeared in the Bulletin's pages.
