Bernie Monagle grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, and before becoming a teacher tried a number of different jobs including fruit-picker, builder's labourer, drama consultant, courier and actor. He has worked at Sacred Heart College, Kyneton, teaching English and Physical Education, and as a student counsellor, and runs a primary school programme 'Let's get boys reading and resilient in Primary Schools', involving students, teachers and parents.
