Donald Cameron probably spent his early years in the New England region of New South Wales before moving as a boy with his family to Bendigo (then known as Sandhurst) in Victora. He was a Melbourne correspondent for country newspapers, and the Member for West Bourke in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1877 to 1880. Cameron was the founder and director of the Melbourne publishing and printing company Cameron, Laing.
Cameron wrote at least thirteen novels. Most were not published as books, but some were serialised in Cameron's Literary Supplement and two were published in the Australian Journal, which also published many of his short stories.
