Born in Brisbane in 1961, Michael Crane moved to Melbourne at the age of eighteen. He studied writing and literature at Deakin University and began performing his work in public from 1988 onwards. He has had over 100 poems individually published in magazines and newspapers since 1993.

In 1991, Crane founded poetry Slams in Melbourne. (Slams later evolved throughout Australia.) He has organised over 200 music and poetry events in Melbourne including successful tributes to Leonard Chen and Charles Bukowski.

Crane has also completed a writer's residency at the Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales.
