BiographyHistory

Peter Burton is a third-generation Australian who wrote his first poem at 28. He writes on a variety of personal and social issues.

Burton describes himself as 'non-academic, non-literary' and has worked in a number of jobs including shipping clerk, teacher, bar attendant, farm labourer and editor. In 1977 he founded The Border Issue with Martin Duwell, Keryn Henry and Cornelis Vleeskens. The publication was a vehicle for Queensland poets and was produced periodically until 1985.

Burton's poetry has been published in several journals and anthologies. His first book of poems was S.T.O.P. at Every Corner (SweetWater Poets Series, 1982) and he has also published Lightening Lyrics with Ross Clark and Aub Heck (Border Issue Press, 1983) and The Bed & Border Issue with Ross Clark (Border Issue Press, 1983).
