'Following his retirement from La Trobe University at the end of 2008, Harry Aveling took up an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the School of Social Sciences. Professor Aveling specialises in Indonesian and Malay literature, and Translation Studies. Besides publishing widely in translation theory, he has translated extensively from Indonesian, Malay, French (Francophone writing from Vietnam), and co-translated from Hindi.

In 1991 he was awarded the Anugerah Pengembangan Sastera by the Federation of Malay Writers Associations (GAPENA) for his contribution to the international recognition of Malay literature. He has served as Dean of the School of Humanities, Murdoch University, Western Australia (1977-1979). His professional service includes extended periods as the Treasurer of the Asian Studies Association of Australia and the Cultural Studies Association of Australia (1997-2002), and most recently President of AALITRA, the Australian Association for Literary Translation (2005-2008).

Harry Aveling has held the rank of Adjunct Professor at Ohio University since 2002 and continues to teach on a regular basis in the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. In 2006 and 2007 he served as Visiting Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Indonesia. He is also a Member of the Doctoral Studies Committee for the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and taught there in the latter part of 2008.
