1 y separately published work icon Carol Raye : Funny Business John Senczuk , Melbourne : Arcadia , 2023 27217532 2023 single work biography 'Born Kathleen Mary Corkrey at Rotherhithe, in the London docklands, in 1923, her first stage role, at age 15, was the lead in the Portsmouth Players production of No, No, Nanette in 1938. She came into the orbit of Australian choreographer Freddie Carpenter who launched her War-time stage career, changing her name to Carol Raye. Her breakout opportunity came soon after war was declared, when she made her triumphant London debut at His Majesty's Theatre in Stanley Lupino's Funny Side Up. In 1945 Raye made her screen debut, starring opposite Billy Hartnell in Strawberry Roan. But it was as the Empress Maria, opposite Peter Graves, in the musical romance Waltz Time which launched her as an international star on its release. She met her husband, Yorkshireman Robert Ayre-Smith, a student at the Royal Veterinary College (London), in 1948. They were married 3 years later in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1951. Within weeks of the birth of their first daughter in 1952, Ayre-Smith took up a position to run a 1,000-acre experimental farm in Kenya. Raye was by his side for the next 12 years, but while in Nairobi from 1962, Raye was contracted as producer/director (and on-screen talent) for the fledgling multilingual Kenya Broadcasting Corporation. Raye's was one of the first faces on television in British East Africa. Following Kenya's independence in October 1963, Ayre-Smith accepted an offer to join the CSIRO in Australia, and the family emigrated to Australia in 1964. Her career since has been stella as both performer and producer, and following the phenomenal success of The Mavis Bramston Show in 1964 she was regarded as one of the most influential women on Australian Television. Over the following three decades she made a return to the stage, appearing at the Ensemble, Hunter Valley, Marian Street and Sydney Theatre Companies, as well as starring roles in the commercial theatre. Raye officially retired in 2000, following a guest appearance in SeaChange. Carol Raye died peacefully on 18 June 2022. She was posthumously awarded the AM in the Queen's Birthday 2022 Honours.' (Publication summary)
1 y separately published work icon Griffin Rising : The First Decade of the Griffin Theatre Company (1979-1988) John Senczuk , Haymarket : Esson Press , 2019 19927779 2019 multi chapter work criticism

'The Griffin Theatre Company celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2019. Its success and longevity the great legacy of its founders Jenny Laing-Peach, Peter Carmody, Penny Cook, Rosemarie Lenzo and Eadie Kurzer.

'This 300 page illustrated book surveys the history of the people, plays and productions from 1979 - the first meeting a director Jenny Laing-Peach’s cottage in Griffin Street, Surry Hills - to the departure of the first Artistic Director, Peter Kingston, and the appointment of his replacement Ian B Watson in 1988.

'The Griffin Theatre Company’s inaugural production, JP Donleavy's ‘uproarious tragedy,’ The Ginger Man, opened at the Kirk Gallery on 6 April, 1979. A year later, they were the resident company at the Stables Theatre, 10 Nimrod Street, Kings Cross. Over the decade that followed, the Company was twice the recipient of the Sydney Theatre Critics Award for their season’s work; Michael Gow’s Away and Europe, Richard Barrett’s The Heartbreak Kid, Karen Mainwaring’s Binge, Ned Manning's Us or Them, Alex Harding’s Only Heaven Knows, and the group-devised Soft Targets all representative of the high calibre of production presented. The survey also places the Company, and its ‘all-Australian’ repertoire in the landscape of the Sydney and National theatre enterprise.

'In 1986, the Griffin’s future was made secure through the generosity of philanthropist Dr Rodney Seaborn - and the SBW Foundation - who purchased the building, offering it back for the Company’s use. The book provides an extended biography of Dr Seaborn and the history of the Stables Theatre itself, revealing an extraordinary connection between the Dr Seaborn and the venue that can be traced back to the 1840s!

'Indexed, and including numerous production photographs, there is also a full list of repertoire, cast and production creatives.'

1 y separately published work icon The Time Is Ripe for the Great Australian Musical John Senczuk , Strawberry Hills : Currency House , 2015 8542268 2015 single work criticism

'Australian audiences have an unquenchable thirst to musical theatre. It is big show business. But as another revival of Les Mis or Wicked flows back to the originators and investors abroad, the local, indigenous musical is virtually extinct. Here we have no shortage of start-ups, and composers and performers of world calibre; but rarely are they given the opportunity to develop a large-scale work. What we need is a proactive, sustainable national funding and development program that will support that talent right through to a commercial market readiness . With that backing, writes John Senczuk, we could conquer the world.' (Publication summary)
