Jane Sarah Doudy was the second of 6 children of businessman Henry James Stanes and his wife Anne, who emigrated to SA in 1849 in the Caspar when Jane was three. In 1874 she was the first Infant School mistress of the Grote Street Infant Model School and she was later headmistress at the Grote Street Model School Girls' department. In 1879-1880 she was the first headmistress of the Advanced School for Girls in Franklin Street. In 1881 she married Henry Alfred Doudy, a stock inspector at Mt Gambier.

As well as fiction she wrote a treatise on the higher education of women; The Higher Education of Women: Is it of Benefit to the Human Race? [1914].
