The adventures of an English surgeon, who had emigrated with his family to Tasmania. Various aspects of early colonial life are touched upon including bushrangers and aborigines. The 'Black War' in Tasmania is dealt with in Chapter XVIII, and Buckley, the wild white man of Port Phillip, in Chapter XIX. The second part of the book is devoted to 'The Adventures of Harry Delane' - a young Tasmanian in England. (John Alexander Ferguson Bibliography of Australia. Volume VII. (1969):141).

This story about an encounter with an imaginary bunyip is a charming study of the colonial vernacular, for example: 'skeared' [scared], 'ketched' [caught], 'summut' [something], 'airthquake' [earthquake].

One of the adventures in this volume concerns Rowe's visit to Australia in the 1850s.

The story of a 'Britisher' (of unspecified origin), arrived in Australia via the United States for the gold rush, who spends his time mocking but being unable to emulate the sporting feats of his Australian-born companions.

The Lawsons deal with bushrangers, snakes, and lost children with courage and humour, and details such as life on the goldfields and the influence of and attitudes to the Chinese are presented in a direct, often ironic style. Rowe subscribes to the superiority of the native-born Australian over the immigrant: "They're a queer lot the blackfellows ... but they're a long sight better than the new chums -they were born in the colony just like us.
