— Appears in: Tremendous Worlds : Australian Women's Drama 1890-1960 1999; (p. 273-358)

The main theme of the play is the clash between Jane Franklin, a woman of outstanding character and advanced ideas, and the Colonial Secretary, John Montague, leader of the autocratic officials.

Deals with the clashes between Sir John Franklin and the remnants of the 'Arthur Faction', principally the Colonial Secretary and the Chief Police Magistrate. Franklin's position is made the worse by a well-meaning but thoughtless Private Secretary....The Colonial Secretary is upheld and Franklin is disgraced and recalled, but his influence, in the form of the work he has done and the work of his wife, 'Jane, My Love', for the Colony, compensate for his official humiliation. Lady Jane Franklin is the dominating character who by her charm, poise, intellect and vision of the future commands respect, attention and affection. 'An old lady living in retirement was elated when her son and her brother-in-law invited her to spend a holiday at a tourist resort as their guests. She was a delightful old lady, one to whom people turned naturally and in whom they placed immediate and well-founded trust. She was not to know that her two hosts, racketeers both, saw her as a decoy, using her obvious goodness as a cover for a splendid fleecing season.

'Overhearing a telephone conversation between her son and a girl with whom he was obviously in love, although he was about to announce his engagement to a fellow-guest at the hotel, she realized that she had been invited to the hotel for a definite purpose, and she realized what that purpose was. She explained the position to the people whom she had met, and on whom her son and her brother-in-law had been battening, and then she went off, obviously with the intention of committing suicide. She was dissuaded by another guest who had previously warned her subtly of the activities of her relatives, and there was the hint of a happy ending as her son raced out to find her. Her brother-in-law was clearly beyond redemption.'

1 form y separately published work icon Darkness Over the Earth Catherine Shepherd , Australia : ABC Radio National , 1950 12859764 1950 single work radio play children's

Broadcast on Good Friday and taking its title from the Gospel of St Luke ('And it was almost the sixth hour: and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour', chapter XXIV, verse 44), this was likely an account of the crucifixion of Jesus. Based on radio guides, it was intended for a child audience.
