BiographyHistory

Musician, best known for his association with Midnight Oil. He published his autobiography in 2015, and has also co-authored a radio play.

Peter Garrett was lead singer of the Australian band Midnight Oil with whom he created thirteen albums and was awarded an ARIA for lifetime achievement in 2006. Garrett has a sustained record as an environmental activist and served two terms as president of the Australian Conservation Foundation. In 2000 he received the Australian Humanitarian Foundation Award (environment category) and in 2003 he was made a Member of the General Division of the Order of Australia. Garrett has also been a member of the international board of Greenpeace and a Senate candidate for the Nuclear Disarmament Party (1984).

At the 2004 Australian federal election Garrett was elected as the Labor (ALP) Member for Kingsford Smith. He was subsequently appointed Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Heritage and the Arts. When the ALP was elected to government in late 2007, Garrett became Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.

Garrett was writer-narrator of the documentary film Shoalwater Bay - Up for Grabs (1992) and co-writer of the ABC radio drama Outlanders (1995).
