Appointed by George Robertson, Jose reviewed Angus & Robertson manuscripts and edited key publications, including The Australian Encyclopedia. This thesis examines the influences which shaped his emerging vision of Australia and his contribution to Australian literary culture at a crucial time in the development of Australian nationhood.

John Pearson Rows (1810-1878), pastoralist and doctor, came from England to Australia in 1832 and eventually settled in Victoria in 1847. These letters are a collection made by Rowe's second daughter, Frances, which were sent to her from her sisters Cecily and Jane.
