BiographyHistory

New Zealand historian J. C. Beaglehole's works include scholarly editions of the Endeavour journals of James Cook and Joseph Banks published in 1955 and 1962 respectively. Roger Robinson in The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature (1998): 49, writes that Beaglehole 'made historical narrative a literary form, weaving complex threads into a robust and lucid prose ... The quality of his prose ... honed partly by the practice of poetry.' Beaglehole’s poetry was widely included in anthologies published in New Zealand in the mid 20th century and in Australian literary journals including The Bulletin.
