Frank Woodley began his career by performing fringe comedy in Melbourne during the late 1980s. This period also lead Woodley to form a successful Melbourne-based partnership with fellow comedian Colin Lane (q.v.). Better known as 'Lano and Woodley', the comedy duo have a reputation for live performances which draw on the conventions of slap-stick to move unpredictably between pre-written routine and chaotic improvisation.

Winning the prestigious Perrier Award for best comedy show at the 1994 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the duo went on to star in their own television series, The Adventures of Lano and Woodley, which was produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in 1997 and 1999. They have also written and performed routines at various comedy festivals both in Australia and overseas, made numerous television appearances and co-authored one novel, Housemeeting (1996).

More recently, Woodley has performed solo stand-up comedy while also remaining a member of the 'Lano and Woodley' double-act.

In 2018, he was nominated (along with Frank Woodley) for best comedy performer at the Helpmann Awards, for Lano & Woodley - Fly.
