BiographyHistory

Thomas Edward Spencer was the son of Daniel O'Brien and his wife Ann, nee Coulthard. He visited the Victorian goldfields with his brother in 1863, but returned home one year later. By the time he married in 1869 he no longer used the name 'O'Brien'.

In 1875 he migrated to Sydney, where he set up as a building contractor. He also became an industrial arbitrator. He was successful in both fields, as well as in his writing. His books were reprinted many times and sold extremely well. Some of his humorous poems are still popular as school recitation pieces.
