Wayne Harrison was born and raised in Melbourne and inherited his family's love of sport and theatre. After spending some time with J. C. Williamson Harrison moved to Sydney to undertake tertiary study at the University of New South Wales. He joined the Sydney Theatre Company (STC) in 1981 as resident dramaturge. He became associate director of Northside Theatre Company in 1987 and artistic director of STC in 1990. He later moved to London for several years to work with Back Row Productions. Harrison returned to Australia in 2005 to direct Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations and to continue in other theatre direction roles.
