Jamie Grant was educated at Geelong Grammar School and LaTrobe University. He was employed at various times as an advertising copywriter, a trainee teacher and a publisher's representative before moving to Sydney in 1984. Here he worked in a bookshop, first as an assistant and later as manager, while also working as a freelance journalist. He has also co-edited two anthologies of sports writing, edited the William Heinemann Australian Poetry Series, and been a book reviewer and poetry editor for The Bulletin.

Duffy and Snellgrove, Publishers, say of his work, 'Unlike many of today's poets, he uses rhyme and metre in his work, and has shown successfully that the contemporary world can be expressed by time-tested methods. His other major achievement has been to use verse to deal with material these days more usually written about in prose. His poetry is noted for its journalistic reports, narratives, personal memoirs, meditative essays, travelogues, and even, on occasion, literary criticism'.
