BiographyHistory

At the time of publication of Joe Nangan's Dreaming, Joe Nangan was one of only a few remaining Nygina people, who for centuries had lived along the banks of the Fitzroy River in Western Australia - the last of the Nygina Songmen, a composer of songs and stories, and keeper of legends and traditions. He was also a Maban, or witch doctor - a keeper of the Law, and an artist skilled at carving pearl shells and boab nuts, and drawing. For fifty years he was also a stockman and drover.

As well as the work listed here, there is also an eight-page book containing his artwork, Butcher Joe Nangan : Works on Paper, held at the La Trobe University Library (Bundoor campus, Borchardt Library).
