BiographyHistory

William Harcus was educated by his father and worked as a journalist prior to entering the ministry of the Congrational Church. While serving in various churches throughout the UK, Harcus contributed to a number of religious journals, including the Christian Witness.

In 1860, Harcus left England with his family, arriving in Melbourne on 25 November, but soon re-located to Adelaide. Harcus ministered at Clayton Congregational Church, Kensington until 1865. He also wrote for the South Australian Register from 1862 to 1867 at which time he transferred to the South Australian Advertiser. Harcus was literary editor until 1874 and full editor from 1874 to 1876.

Harcus wrote Handbook for Emigrants Proceeding to South Australia (1873) and South Australia: Its History, Resources and Productions (1876), both commissioned by the South Australian government.
