The publishing company known as John Miller Sweet was excusively associated with the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate between 1876 and 1980. It was established by John Sweet following his decision to merge his own paper, the Plattsburg-based Miners Advocate and Northumberland Recorder with the competing Newcastle Chronicle (1858-1876). The first edition of the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate, appeared on 3 April.

John Miller Sweet's active involvement with the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate's ended in 1977 when the paper was acquired by John Fairfax Holdings Pty Ltd. The company's name continued to be linked to the Herald (by name only) until 1980, however. In that year the Sydney-based Fairfax company renamed its Newcastle flagship the Newcastle Herald, with the publisher identified as Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate Pty Ltd.
