BiographyHistory

'Gillian Russell is Gerry Higgins Chair in Irish Studies, The University of Melbourne and former Professor of English in the School of Cultural Inquiry, at the Australian National University. She holds a BA Hons from The Queen’s University Belfast and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her first monograph, The Theatres of War: Performance, Politics and Society 1793-1815, came out with Oxford University Press in 1995 and she has published widely on such diverse topics as military camps in the eighteenth century, gambling by upper-class women, adultery in Jane Austen’s fiction, and the behaviour of servants in the Georgian theatre. She was an associate editor of An Oxford Companion to the Romantic Age (gen.editor Iain McCalman, Oxford, 1999) and co-editor, with Clara Tuite, of Romantic Sociability: Social Networks and Literary Culture in Britain, 1770-1840 (Cambridge, 2002). Her monograph Women, Sociability, and Theatre in Georgian London was published by Cambridge University Press in 2007. Since 2010 she has been working as an Australian Research Council professorial fellow on a project concerning print culture and sociability in Romantic period Britain and Australia.'
