BiographyHistory

Thomas Richards is considered to be one of the first short story writers and essayists in Australia. In 1833 Richards edited the Tasmanian and, with Henry Melville (q.v.), produced the Hobart Town Magazine. By 1837 he was assistant editor of the Hobart Town Courier, as well as being associated with the Colonial Times. In his later years he contributed to the Hobart Mercury. Most of Richards's identifiable work was published in the Hobart Town Magazine, with at least half of that journal's contents being his poems, essays, reviews, sketches and short stories.
