BiographyHistory

The ACT Publishing Group is a dynamic group of companies founded in 1990. Since then it has become recognised as Russia's leading publishing house, releasing more than 40,000 titles from all genres. The company, which has won numerous literary competitions and been awarded prestigious, including the Russian Booker, Big Book, and Manuscript of the Year, has also established relationships with many foreign literary agencies, thereby allowing its readers access to some of the best literature in translation.

Among the non-Russian authors to be published by ACT are: Michael Weller, Dan Brown, John Grisham, Stephen King, A. Bertram Chandler, Douglas Coupland, Johanna Lindsey, Colleen McCullough, Judith McNaught, Stephenie Meyer, Wilbur Smith, Bertris Small, Nicholas Charles Sparks, Danielle Steele, JRR Tolkien, John Fowles, and Sidney Sheldon.

ACT publishes Russian literature, foreign classics and modern fiction, including detective and action genres, sentimental prose, science fiction and fantasy, children's titles, business books, manuals and textbooks, reference, encyclopedias, dictionaries scientific and popular publications, art books, atlases and maps. Under various brand names it also produces stationery, colouring books, toys, books, puzzle, puzzles, board games and puzzles, guidebooks, calenders, and electronic books.

Notes

  • A number of online bibliographies, fan websites and library catalogues incorrectly record the name of this publishing house as ACT Mockba, Act Mockba, AST (as in AST Mockba), Изд-во ACT (or Izd-vo ACT). The following issues should be noted, however:

      • The company's website (www.ast.ru) consistently spells the name of the company with capitals - as in Издательской группы АСТ (translated as ACT Publishing Group).
      • The work 'Mockba' is an Anglicised translation of the Russian script for the word Moscow. There is no reference to Mockba in the company's name on its website. It only occurs in places such as the 'Contact' pages (included as part of the company's various Moscow contact addresses).
      • ACT is also commonly (and incorrectly) translated as AST. This occurs frequently with Google's online translation service. Thus while AST does not appear anywhere within the company's original Russian language website (apart from the URL), it can sometimes be found when the site is translated into English.
      • The Russian script Изд-во (Izd-vo) means "publisher" or "publishing house of" and is therefore not actually part of the company's name but rather a descriptive.
