BiographyHistory

Maurice O'Connell was a British soldier who came to the colony of New South Wales with Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810. Appointed to the position of lieutenant-governor he was also in command of the 73rd Regiment. O'Connell and his regiment were transferred to Ceylon in 1814. He attained the rank of major-general in 1830, and five years later was knighted. When he returned to Sydney in 1838 he had been given command of the colonial forces. O'Connell served as acting-governor of New South Wales from 12 July to 2 August 1846.
