BiographyHistory

Fred Fogarty was born in the community of Purga in Queensland and worked for some time as an agricultural worker before moving to Darwin and joining the Larrakia people in their struggle for land rights. Fogarty was elected President of the Gwalwa Daraniki Association and was instrumental in raising awareness nationally and internationally toward the Larrakia struggle for land rights. He was imprisoned on a number of occasions for his defence of Kulaluk during protests when confronted by surveyors, construction workers and police. Fred Fogarty is the grandfather of Aboriginal rights activist and poet Lionel Fogarty (q.v.).
