John E. Smith broke his neck in a fall from a horse on the eve of his 25th birthday, two weeks before he was to marry. The accident left him a quadriplegic. He took up art as therapy and surprised himself, progressing to become a renowned Australian mouth artist with the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists.
