BiographyHistory

Raewyn Connell has been a university professor at the University of Sydney, a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, and one of Australia's leading social scientists. Her books include Southern Theory: The Global Dynamics of Knowledge in Social Science (2007); Gender: In World Perspective (2009); Masculinities (1995); Making the Difference: Schools, Families and Social Divisions (1982); Ruling Class, Ruling Culture: Studies of Conflict Power and Hegemony in Australian Life (1977); and Gender and Power: Society, the Person and Sexual Politics (1987). She is one of the founders of social research on men and masculinities, and has worked with the United Nations, Australian governments and social movements on gender equality, social justice in education, and other problems. She is also a long-term participant in the labour and peace movements. Her work has been translated into fourteen languages other than English.
